The NOAA Marine Debris program is currently offering several nationwide, competitive funding opportunities for marine debris projects. The types of grants include:

  • Removal Grants

These grants offer funding that supports locally-driven, community-based marine debris and removal projects, while benefiting coastal habitat, waterways and wildlife.

  • Education and Outreach Grants

These grants support activities to educate the public about issues surrounding marine debris to: 

  1. encourage changes in behavior to reduce and address marine debris
  2. develop and implement activities that reduce and prevent marine debris
  3. engage the public in active participation

  • Research Grants

These grants provide funding for research projects focused on the persistence and chemical impacts of marine debris.

  • Fishing for Energy Grants

These grants provide:

  1. commercial fishermen with no-cost opportunities to dispose of derelict and retired fishing gear
  2. support for direct removal and assessment efforts
